MDS CheckID® system
The CheckID system is an anti-fraud id verification system that confirms the identity and presence of individuals (patients and providers) involved in billing to Medicare and other medical insurance providers.
There are three segments to the system.
Part One: The provider's office.
The components to this segment are hardware-based:
- A computer with internet access
- A card reader attached by USB to the computer
- A thumbprint reader, also attached by USB to the computer
Part Two: The application. The web-based CheckID® system allows the provider to build an ID database of their patients. The system prompts for scanning of the patient's medicare card and thumbprint. If the patient is new, our system seeks out to confirm their identity. If the patient is already associated with the provider's account, a time-stamped verification number is provided immediately.
The provider includes this verification number in their billing process.
Part Three: Our middleware servers. The key to our system is our middleware servers that compare data from the provider and Medicare to confirm identification.
The system only "reads" information from Medicare or other insurance providers, so their systems remain secure and unaltered. Our verification number is then available for insurance providers and clearinghouses to "get", or read from us. This way, all systems remain secure and no one is modifying someone else's system.
The results are: insurance providers are assured that a specific patient is present and receiving services at a specific time. This timestamp and identification can provide a trusted datapoint for post billing auditing systems to compare other services the patient may or may not have received. For instance, we confirm and verify that patient John Doe was present at a specific time for service with provider A. Bill auditing software determines that Provider B used John Doe to bill a service 300 miles away later that day. The insurance provider can then focus resources with confidence on the Provider B billing to confirm that it was fraudulent.
